Winner 2018 - Aled Harper, Pembrokeshire

Aled Harper, a member of Fishguard YFC, Pembrokeshire was awarded with a prize of £1,000 on Monday 23th of July at the Royal Welsh Show as the winner of the 2018 Wales YFC Agricultural Bursary.

The award seeks to support young people who are trying to secure a future for themselves in agriculture. A panel of judges, decided that the deserving winner of the prize this year was Aled as he showed exceptional entrepreneur skills.

Aled was very eager to look for an additional source of income for his family farm. He has had more responsibility at home on his farm and now keeps his own flock of sheep and pigs. Following on from this, Aled was very interested to sell his local produce, and noticed there was a market for major event caterers. He then went on to establish his own catering business, 'Coast Roast'.

Having received the good news Aled said; It’s a great honour to receive this year's Agriculture Bursary to develop my business. Undoubtedly, this opportunity will be a great platform to advertise the new initiative to a wider audience. In addition, the money will enable me to invest in new marketing resources, training opportunities and to generally develop my venture. "

Speaking on behalf of Wales YFC, Hefin Evans said; “We are very pleased with the high number and standard of entries received this year. There were many deserving candidates with a winner that showed exceptional entrepreneurial skills with the development of his own business. I am very confident that Aled’s business, ‘Coast Roast’ will be very a successful and profitable model to other young farmers who wish to pursue this path in the future and I wish him all the luck with his business.”
